10 days to go…

We are in to the 10 day countdown, as we prepare ourselves for our pilgrimage to Kraków, Poland, for World Youth Day 2016.

So what’s this all about…

World Youth Day (WYD) was initiated by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1985. The first celebration of WYD in 1986, saw bishops from all over the world being invited to schedule an annual youth event to be held every Palm Sunday in their dioceses. It is celebrated at the diocesan level annually, and at the international level every two to three years at different locations.

But what actually happens…

Young people travel from across the world on pilgrimage, to celebrate their Catholic faith, bear witness and fellowship with millions of other young Catholics.

Young adults are up to the age of 35 (give or take a few years!!), and the event is based around prayer, Catechesis, fellowship and most importantly Mass.

WYD is a 5 day festival and the huge finale is held in a large park, where pilgrims will journey together, to sleep under the stars. Together they will wake and celebrate, whilst they wait for Pope Francis to arrive and celebrate Mass. It is at the end of this celebration Pope Francis will announce where the next international event will take place. Maybe England?!!

Who’s going from Portsmouth Diocese…

We are a group of 100 pilgrims, from across the Diocese, including the Channel Islands. We are a group mixed with lay people, seminarians, sisters, priests and our Bishop Phillip. We will travel together to Poland, we will celebrate together and we will journey back together. Importantly, we will come back to share our stories of faith with our Diocese, we hope you’ll enjoy!!

What to expect from our blog…

We will blog through out our pilgrimage, we hope every day. This way, all our family, friends and fellow followers in Christ, our neighbours, can journey with us, on our pilgrimage.

We hope to blog about what we experience, how we feel and when we encounter Christ.

Please keep us in your prayers, as we now pack our bags, ready for World Youth Day Kraków, 2016.
